DANI & MARK TOPANGA CANYON WEDDING

Dani and Mark had no idea what they wanted for their wedding when they first started planning, but they immediately agreed on a few must-haves: a completely outdoor venue, amazing cocktails and food, a lighthearted and casual vibe, 90s hip hop, and lots and lots and lots of heart. We loved that we got the opportunity to not only DJ this wedding but to witness these two on their special day!

From the bride:
To set the tone for our guests, we sent letter-pressed invitations with the promise of booze, food, and some bad dance moves. We skipped having a traditional bridal party and instead asked our immediate family members to walk down the aisle with us, with the women in all white and the men in black tuxes to complement my husband’s dark blue tux. My incredibly talented sister sewed the flower girl’s outfits, a blue varsity jacket, floral top, and white ballet skirt as a nod to an almost identical outfit I wore for our engagement photos. It was incredibly challenging, but I managed to find a beautiful beaded Inbal Dror gown that was both backless and fitted, two aspects my husband explicitly requested even though he could not care less about fashion the remaining 364 days of the year. My brother officiated, which gave us the chance to work with him on his speech to incorporate our favorite lines. We wrote our own vows, and I was told we made multiple guests bawl, a fact I am quite proud of!

We had open seating and several serving stations so our guests could interact with the chefs and pick from a variety of small bites instead of having a coursed meal. Cocktail hour involved various types of unique tacos, and we served five signature cocktails one for each of the main spirits. We ordered rose gold foiled napkins that said Drunk in Love! and Nom. Nom. Nom., to keep things fun and light.

My now sister-in-law, who works for a vineyard, helped us select all of the wine and champagne, and we also proudly served a specialty tea and coffee from my brother coffee shop, daKuppe. Instead of having a cake, we asked our guests to bring a dessert of their choosing. We also served seven different flavors of gelato and ice cream, with each flavor holding a special memory for us. Since we’re two nerds who bonded over old school hip hop, we custom ordered dance floor decals that said Drop It Like Its Hot, a reference to a great Snoop Dogg song. Most importantly, we had the foresight to hire a team of amazing and kind vendors, who we hired based on equal parts skill, talent, and sincerity.

While I am incredibly proud of my husband and myself for the time, effort, and creativity we put forth in customizing and curating our wedding, a pleasant surprise, since we initially wanted to elope to keep things ultra simple my favorite moments were the things we did not plan: the calm and relaxing morning we spent together, joking over a gigantic breakfast that it wasn’t too late to call it quits while simultaneously knowing with absolute certainty we were exactly where we wanted to be, at the most romantic b&b we had also visited exactly one year prior; and the four wonderful and tear-inducing toasts/roasts our friends and family gave us. I think, in the end, that’s what weddings should be about: celebrating the immense love between two people by everyone who has ever loved and supported them. Frankly, if I didn’t write down all of our wedding details I’d probably forget them in a few years, but I’ll never, ever, forget how loved, in all capacities of the word, I felt on my wedding day. And because of that, it was definitely the best day ever.
